Newton Claims Talcott Cedarberry Bowl Title
Arman Newton produced a resilient final-round performance to secure the Blue Championship title as the Talcott Cedarberry Bowl reached a dramatic conclusion at Belmont Hills Golf Club.
In the Premier 16-18 Age Division, Newton entered the final day with a target on his back but managed to hold his nerve. He carded a four-over-par 74, a round characterized by steady scoring that featured three birdies and eight pars. Despite dropping shots on seven holes, his consistency across the tournament left him at ten-over par total, safely clear of the chasing pack. Johnny Bart made a spirited late charge with the low round of the division, a two-over-par 72, to claim second place at 18-over par, while Oliver Betschart finished in third following a challenging final round of 80.
The White Championship Division, featuring the 14-15 Age Group, saw Antonio Fortuna emerge victorious after a battle of attrition. Fortuna’s final round of 82 was an adventurous one, including a birdie and seven pars to offset a mix of bogeys and higher scores. He finished at 33-over par for the tournament to take the top spot. The race for second was much tighter, decided by a scorecard tie-break as Darina Betschart and Charlie Hopkin both finished on 39-over par. Betschart, who was the leading girl in the field, took the runner-up position after an impressive seven-over-par final round, while Hopkin had to settle for third.
In the Red Championship Division 1 for 12–13-year-olds, Lewis MacFarlane was the standout performer. MacFarlane navigated the Belmont Hills layout with maturity beyond his years, firing a final-round 79 that included two birdies and seven pars. His 20-over-par total gave him a massive margin of victory over his peers. Austin Frank secured the second-place trophy after finishing 55-over par total, while Hugo Adams rounded out the podium spots in third.
In the Red Championship Division 2 which was for golfers under 12 years of age, Bradford Laing displayed his dominance as he finsihed some 23 strokes ahead of the field in his flight with consistent scores of 80, 77 and 83 respectively. Jack Jones finished in the second spot with Joshua Cann rounding out the top 3 positions.
The Novice Divisions were for players without official handicap indexes. They played 9 holes on Saturday & Sunday under the Stableford scoring format. In the Novice 12 – 13-year-old division, Oran Lynch amassed 58 points to take the top honors with Matthew Hoey placing second with 41 points and Henry Brown placing third with 39 points. The U12 Division was dominated by Michael Hinwood as he topped the leaderboard with 53 points with Cyril Jones placing a close second with 49 points. Rounding out the top three was Zy’nico Wales with 38 points. There were three girls in the Novice Girls Division with Juliana Gakundi placing first with an impressive total of 47 points. Securing the second spot was Poppy Parry with 36 points and Zara Soutter in third with 31 points.
The tournament once again highlighted the depth of junior talent in the region, with the challenging Belmont Hills greens providing a stern test for the next generation of golfers. As the trophies were presented on the final green, the focus for many of these young athletes now shifts to the upcoming summer schedule and the opportunity to build on their success in the Talcott Cedarberry Bowl.
